Tokyo, Japan

The Free Press Association of Japan announces the seventh annual Freedom Of The Press Award.

FPAJ was founded in 2011 by famed Journalist Takashi Uesugi, shortly before the devastating Fukushima Disaster where the press was barred from critical, lifesaving information.

The FPAJ represents Japanese Journalists in their fight for Freedom of the Press Japan where the Freedom of the Press has gone from 11th to 72nd, in particular working to open up the closed “Kisha Kurabu” system which functions as government censorship of the news.

This years awardee is Journalist Shiori Ito who was raped by one of Japan’s top Journalists and had the courage to go to court to have her case adjudicated following the failure of police to arrest the perpetrator due to a telephone call from the Prime Minister’s office directly to the local police

For her courage in the face of near total opposition and for the timeliness of her fight at the time of the “Me Too” Movement worldwide

In honoring Shiori, the FPAJ honors all the silent victims that share her situation and hopes her nomination will serve as a watershed to encourage others to come forward

The FPAJ “Press Freedom” award will be presented on Friday, April 6 at 1PM at the National Diet, Upper House, building B102.
